Staten Island has a unique potential for development with its strategically located waterfront, the largest supply of vacant land in NYC, and its position within one of the largest markets for goods and services in the world. However, while Staten Island is well positioned for development, the borough is also faced with challenges that must be addressed if it is to reach its full potential. The Port Richmond Neighborhood was one of the sites covered by the 2008 AIA RUDAT study. This studio not only participated in the RUDAT process but also developed some of the conclusions with neighborhood specific architectural interventions including strategies to utilize the Island’s diverse waterfronts as an integral part of design and community planning, strategies to maximize the social, economic, residential, and recreational opportunities along Staten Island’s coastal communities, recommendations to update the existing infrastructure to accommodate appropriate future waterfront planning, strategies that will foster community building with a balanced blend of natural open spaces based on solid planning standards and strategies to implement sound design principles along the waterfront.
