NYIT Wins Battle of the Boros For Second Straight Year
September 30, 2002
CONEY ISLAND,
N.Y. -
The Bears of
the New York Institute of Technology defeated the Manhattan College
Jaspers, 7-1, to win the Battle of the Boros baseball tournament for the
second consecutive year.
The battle of the Boros is an annual fall baseball tournament hosted by
St. Francis College of Brooklyn, NY and includes Wagner College, Fordham
University, LIU, Manhattan College, St Francis and NYIT. The tournament is held at Keyspan Park in Coney Island, which is
home to the New York Mets Minor League affiliate, the Brooklyn Cyclones
of the New York Single A Penn League. NYIT opened the tournament by
defeating Fordham University 10-6 on Saturday, September 28 and earned a
bye to the championship round.
The game was scoreless through the first five innings, thanks to strong defensive performances turned in by both teams. In the sixth, the Bears got on the board with two runs as a result of two costly fielding errors by the Jaspers on the same play. After a Garrett McDevitt RBI single scored infielder Brian MacMurray in the seventh, the Bears ripped the game wide open with three additional runs in the eighth. After Jaspers relief pitcher Alex Narus forced Rick Mundy to fly out to center field, Narus proceeded to walk the next four batters to score one run. The other two runs were scored on a single by outfielder Anthony St. George, off of Jaspers pitcher Scott Wordell.
The Jaspers got on the board with their lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, when a Kurt Maser single brought home outfielder Zachary Sousa.
Then in the ninth, New York Tech added one more run for good measure, with Mundy scoring on an RBI single by Jelani Arnold. Bears pitcher and designated hitter Andrew Karkoulas was stellar on the mound today, striking out four and allowing only one hit in his six innings of work. Sophomore Christian Diez worked the final three innings of the game to pick up the save. MacMurray and Mike Gaffney each turned in a double, and Mike Kearney added a single. Outfielder Jeff Muchin scored two of the Bears' runs. The Jaspers were led by Sousa, who was 2-4 with a run scored. Outfielder Matt Cucurullo added a double, and starting pitcher Chris Cody was charged with the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out four batters in seven innings of work.
