Adelphi Downs NYIT 70-57

Old Westbury, NY: The Adelphi University women’s basketball team defeated NYIT 70-57 tonight at Recreation Hall. Adelphi (12-8, 11-6 NYCAC) avenges an early season, over time loss, to NYIT (10-10, 9-8 NYCAC).

Junior Georgia Gordon (St. Ann, Jamaica) nearly recorded a triple-double, 16 points, 14 rebounds and nine steals, but it wasn’t enough as Adelphi built a 29-23 halftime advantage and held off a Lady Bears rally in the second half.

Adelphi extended their half-time lead to as many as 16, with just over 13 minutes remaining in the second half, but NYIT would go on a 16-6 run over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to four, 45-49. Gordon scored eight of her 16 points during the spurt.

The Lady Panthers responded with 10 straight, unanswered points to put the game out of reach. Adelphi’s Jess Dlabola was stellar, scoring a game high 20 points, while dishing out seven assists and adding eight steals. Melanie Mangone and Meranne Whitney chipped in with 15 and 11 points respectively in the victory. Christina Papadapoulou (Nicosia, Cyprus) added 13 points and Tiffany McDonald (Cambria Heights, NY) grabbed a season high 12 rebounds in the loss.

The Lady Bears return to action this Saturday, February 8 when they travel to CW Post University at 2:00PM.
