Faculty advisors should fill
three roles for students. They should serve as resource persons,
providing information about NYIT's academic programs and institutional
requirements in order to assist students in developing the most coherent
plan for their college years. Second, they should serve as a liaison
between students and the NYIT community, referring them to areas of
assistance and familiarizing them with the resources provided by the
institution to meet whatever needs and goals they might have. Finally,
faculty advisors should assist students in understanding the nature and
purpose of higher education and help them develop responsibility for the
direction and completion of their degree program.
Specific
faculty advisor responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the
following:
-
Guidance in the selection of programs of study, construction of class
schedules, and explanations of academic procedures.
-
Exploration of goals and plans pertaining to the student’s academic
and occupational future.
-
Serving as liaison to communicate the concerns of advisees to
appropriate College personnel.
-
Meet with the student at agreed time intervals
for feedback and planning
-
Practical supervision and monitoring of the student’s academic
progress.
-
Counseling in decision-making and the assumption of personal
responsibility.
-
Referral assistance in instances when the advisee needs trained or
professional help with such things as psychological or emotional
problems, career options, various forms of testing, and senior college
information.
