The MyMentor
Program is designed to be a critical mentoring component of the
First-Year Experience at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). This
program has been established to support overall student success,
satisfaction and persistence at NYIT. According to John Gardner (Upcraft
& Gardner, 1990), the freshmen seminar is "the glue the glue that hold
together and solidifies all efforts to enhance freshman academic and
personal success".
Instructors of the College Success Seminar (NYIT 101) serve as a mentor
to each student enrolled in their section of the course. Since all
incoming first-year students are required to complete the College
Success Seminar, students will have weekly contact with their mentor.
Academic mentoring is a collaborative relationship between a student and
a faculty mentor in which students must be proactive in meeting with
their faculty mentor. The Faculty Mentor will assist students in making
sound educational and career plans based on their interests, abilities
and academic majors and refer students to available resources at NYIT.
In the second semester of
their first year, students will continue to receive mentoring from their
NYIT 101 instructor. Mentors will be able to keep in touch with
students via e-mail, telephone, online advising, and campus events.
After
completing their first year, students continue to receive advisement in
the department or school of their major. In addition, students are
encouraged to take advantage of the extensive network of academic
support services available on NYIT’s three campuses, including the
Learning Centers, Writing Centers, Counseling & Wellness Centers, Peer
Mentoring, and their departmental faculty and staff.
Incoming transfer students will be assigned an academic advisor from
their respective academic departments.
