Associate of Applied Science in Career and Technical Education

Program Description

NYIT's Career and Technical Education program prepares individuals with work experience in a trade, technical or health occupation field to teach in the area of their expertise in grades 7-12. It complements the knowledge and skills acquired through practical on-the-job experience and may grant up to 20 credits for qualified work experience. The program leads to an associate of applied science degree and eligibility for NYS certification as a career and technical education teacher under the state's Option A. It combines work experience, a liberal arts core, and a strong professional education component. The program includes early field experience in local schools and develops teaching skills through observation, one-on-one, small group and whole class activities, and culminates with eight weeks of full-time student teaching. The program integrates instructional technology with teaching strategies to address learners' interests and needs.

The AAS in Career and Technical Education program offers you :

  • Career preparation in a field experiencing a shortage of qualified teachers
  • College credit for qualified work experience (up to 20 credits)
  • Associate of applied science in field of work experience
  • Eligibility for NYS certification as a teacher of career and technical education

(1) All entering first-year freshmen, transfer students with less than 12 credits, and students on probation are required to complete the College Success Seminar.

Options for Professional Certification

Individuals who have initial certification and an associate’s degree in one of the career and technical education fields above have two options for eligibility for professional certification: completion of a bachelor of science degree or completion of a 30-credit certificate in Career and Technical Education. The 30-credits include 16 credits in the area of technical education and 14 credits in arts and sciences and education. A passing score on the NYSTCE Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST) and a minimum of 3 years’ qualified teaching experience also required.

Certificate Option for Initial Certification in Career and Technical Education

The certificate option in Career and Technical Education is available only for subjects in the health or trade occupations. It requires 30 credits and leads to initial NYS certification in the specific subject field of expertise if the candidate has at least 4 years’ work experience in the subject field. Additional years of work and/or teaching in the field are required to take full advantage of the work experience credit option in the program. In addition, to qualify for certification candidates must also pass the NYSTCE Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W) and the Content Specialty Test (CST) for their area.

Certificate in Career and Technical Education

Program Description

NYIT's Career and Technical Education program prepares individuals with at least four years of work experience in a trade or health occupation to teach in the area of their expertise in grades 7-12. It complements the knowledge and skills acquired through practical on-the-job experience with a strong professional education foundation including courses that enable professionals to develop and teach curriculum related to their specific field. The 30-credit certificate program leads to eligibility for NYS certification as a career and technical education teacher under the state's Option B. The program includes early field experience in local schools and develops teaching skills through one-on-one, small group and whole class activities, and culminates with eight weeks of full-time student teaching. The program integrates instructional technology with teaching strategies to address learners' interests and needs.

The Certificate Program in Career and Technical Education for Trade or Health Subjects offers you :

  • Career preparation in a field experiencing a shortage of qualified teachers
  • An opportunity to use your trade or health occupation experience to transition to the field of teaching

Bachelor of Science in Career and Technical Education

Program Description

The undergraduate Occupational Teacher Education program develops teacher candidates' knowledge, skills, and personal traits for teaching and learning. It leads to a bachelor's degree and eligibility for teacher certification in New York State . Graduates are prepared to work as teachers in grades 7 through 12. The program includes study in a field of interest, professional education, and clinical practice. The clinical component begins early in the program with field experiences in local schools and develops teaching skills through observation: one-on-one, small group and whole class activities, and culminates with a full semester of student teaching. The program is designed for today's and tomorrow's teaching environment, integrating instructional technology with a broad range of teaching strategies that address the learners' interests and needs.
