Candidate Statement of Understanding

We are delighted that you have chosen NYIT as your program of choice to pursue a Masters of Science degree in school counseling. It is our desire to identify outstanding students and to support them in every way possible throughout their program of study. Each year, school counseling candidates are given an opportunity to present their personal qualifications through the portfolio process. The School Counseling Advisory Team (SCAT) nominates candidates who demonstrate the personal qualities essential to become an outstanding counselor and the ability for academic success.

Candidates who are nominated by the team are admitted on a trial basis pending a written evaluation of progress at the close of the second semester of study. Beyond the second semester, the faculty is ethically bound to safeguard the school counseling profession by continuously monitoring the candidate’s performance through the completion of his/her studies. Completion of the program is dependent not only upon academic performance but the demonstration of appropriate interpersonal skills, professional demeanor and social and ethical judgment. Grades are only a part of what is necessary for successful completion of the program. If concerns arise, candidates may be required to participate in a writing or public speaking course, perform voluntary or paid work in a school setting, repeat courses, seek personal counseling, temporarily suspend coursework, or withdraw from the program. You have a right to appeal any grade or decision about your standing in the program.

The Master’s program in school counseling is designed to accommodate the working professional who leads a busy life. However, a challenging two years and two summers of study are required of you before you enter internship. Please carefully consider your commitment to this program after assessing your personal and professional demands. The degree map outlines your program of study. Attendance in each class is mandatory, all assignments both in class and online must be completed on time and high quality work is expected. This program relies on continuous skills building, not on a collection of discrete courses. It will be very difficult for you to sit out a semester or take only a portion of the semester’s course work. Students who have emergencies will be accommodated to the extent possible, but please be advised that in order to keep pace with your cohort, you may have to start the program over, repeat certain courses and/or sit out a semester or a full year. Each situation will be addressed on an individual basis. Please download, review, and sign the form.
