Adolescence Education: English 7-12
Bachelor of Science

Program Description

As we understand more about the cognitive processes in teaching and learning, the importance of allowing students to find their “voice” has gained attention. English Education, like no other field, has a central role in facilitating the expression of students' voice as a foundation for learning and communicating in all areas. English Education also helps adolescents gain a deeper understanding of themselves and others through the study of writing and literature. The English Education program at NYIT prepares teachers for these roles by providing a substantial background in noted works across literary genre and by developing candidates' communication skills, including writing. In addition, the program provides a theoretical foundation in curriculum design, in methods and materials in English education, educational psychology, and in language and literacy acquisition. Extensive field experiences linked to courses help candidates translate theory into practice. Candidates' teaching expertise is developed through experiences observing good teaching, then beginning to teach one-on-one, with small groups, and then with a whole class and a full semester of student teaching. The program integrates instructional technology with a broad range of teaching strategies and develops candidates' expertise using technology as a significant tool for teaching and learning English in grades 7-12.
