Program Description
Ours is a mathematically dependent world. Every day, we make decisions that require mathematics knowledge and understanding. For this reason, the development of mathematical literacy in all children is a critical educational goal. New York State, however, has a serious shortage of qualified math teachers.
NYIT's undergraduate Adolescence Mathematics Education program leads to a bachelor's degree and eligibility for NYS initial certification as a teacher of Mathematics for grades 7-12. It combines a solid foundation in mathematics with a strong professional education component grounded in both theory and practice. Candidates have extensive field experiences in local 7-12 classrooms and develop teaching skills through observation, one-on-one, small group and whole class activities, and complete their preparation with a full semester of student teaching. They enter the teaching profession prepared to empower learners to excel in the application of mathematics in their everyday lives to solve problems and use their understanding of numbers, operations, geometric relationships, fractions, and algebraic thinking in the situations they encounter. The program also integrates instructional technology throughout and develops candidates' expertise in implementing technology as the foremost tool for teaching and learning.
