STUDENT STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING

We are delighted that you have chosen NYIT as your program of choice to pursue a Master of Science degree in mental health counseling. It is our desire to identify outstanding students and to support them in every way possible throughout their program of study.

Each year, counseling candidates are given an opportunity to present their personal qualification through the portfolio process.

Candidates are admitted on a trial basis pending a written evaluation of progress at the close of the second semester of study. Beyond the second semester, the faculty is ethically bound to safeguard the counseling profession by continuously monitoring the candidate’s performance through the completion of his/her studies. Completion of the program is dependent not only upon academic performance but the demonstration of appropriate interpersonal skills, professional demeanor, and social and ethical judgment. Grades are only a part of what is necessary for successful completion of the program. If concerns arise, candidates may be required to participate in a writing or public speaking course, perform voluntary or paid work in an agency setting, repeat courses, seek personal counseling, temporarily suspend course work, or withdraw from the program. You have a right to appeal any grade or decision about your standing in the program.

The master’s program in mental health counseling is designed to accommodate the working professional who leads a busy life. However, a challenging three years and a summer of study is required of you. Please carefully consider your commitment to this program after assessing your personal and professional demands. Attendance in each class is mandatory, all assignments both in class and on-line must be completed on time and high quality work is expected. This program relies on continuous skill building, not on a collection of discreet courses. It will be very difficult for you to sit out a semester or take only a portion of the semester’s coursework. Students who have emergencies will be accommodated to the extent possible, but please be advised that in order to keep pace with your cohort, you may have to start the program over, repeat certain courses, and/or sit out a semester or a full year. Each situation will be addressed on an individual basis.

I have carefully read the above statement and I agree to the terms as outlined.
