Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society dedicated to encouraging and rewarding academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning.
The oldest and largest freshman honor society, Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois on March 22, 1923, and now has more than 300 chapters throughout the United States and more than 700,000 members.
New York Institute of Technology inducted its first students into Phi Eta Sigma in the spring of 2004. Induction is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment and serves as an incentive for continued high scholarship. It provides members the opportunity to meet freshman scholars from all academic disciplines on their campuses and to join them in promoting academic excellence. Members may apply for scholarships available from national and from local chapters.
Membership in Phi Eta Sigma signifies superior academic ability and performance to prospective employers, and professional and graduate schools. To qualify for membership you must receive a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) during the spring or fall semester of your first year in college.
