Computer Programming

This major is available to campers whether or not they have programming experience.  Each camper is placed in a group according to his/her programming skills demonstrated on our inventory evaluation.  Classroom instruction begins at an appropriate point for each group.  Each classroom session is followed by a lab session in which each camper works individually at a computer and receives support on a 1 to 1 basis.

Other Majors in Computers

Graphics

This major allows youngsters to explore the IBM PC's graphics capabilities through QBASIC programming as well as with a software graphics package.  Though prior programming knowledge is not required, campers who have some will be better able to handle more sophisticated work.

Robotics

This major introduces the camper to a very interesting and challenging combination of experiences. A typical robotics session would be as follows: the instructor would provide the youngsters with an overview of the current project.  Students would then work in pairs to gather the required components, connect them, wire the project and run the pre-packaged software to control the robot via an interface to a microcomputer.  Based on prior background as well as the speed with which the campers absorb the content encountered in the course, the youngsters might be able to modify the pre-packaged software and even design their own robots and the required software.

Web Page Design

In this activity, campers become acquainted with the entire web page creation process.  Each camper will ultimately create and publish one or more web pages with content that interests him or her.  The process follows a series of steps starting with learning HTML (hyper text mark up language).  For a look at HTML in action, while viewing this page click "view" in your web browser, and in the drop-down menu click "source."  You should see a new window with the HTML source code for this web page.  That is where campers start their own pages. After they add pictures, text and links to other pages, they go on to learn Java Script and animations using Macromedia Flash.  Finally, each camper publishes his or her web page so it can be viewed by internet users anywhere on the planet.
