The Gifted and Talented Rookie Program

The Horizon program offers a wide range of subjects to accommodate the multiple interests of bright children.  Our purpose is to provide children with the opportunity to:

Inspire learning.

Allow the child to explore individual interests.

Create learning experiences from new as well as everyday events.

Encourage friendships with other children who have similar interests and abilities.

Broaden the child's skills, interests and experiences.

Horizon provides a stimulating environment to self-select, study and interact through the courses offered to the children.  Students choose from 3-4 selections for each of the 4 periods during the day.  The choices consist of subjects in the arts, sciences, fine arts, writing, model rocketry, chess, foreign languages, swim, theater, music, dance and athletics.  Each class lasts one hour and fifteen minutes.  Creative problem solving and critical thinking skills are given special attention.  A small, warm, comfortable environment is provided for the children, so that a sense of self- worth is fostered.

Each child in the Horizon Program is unique. He/she possesses a particular combination of skills, talents and gifts that no other child has.  What Horizon says is: "Each child is a unique package of potential waiting to be developed."  Our program functions on this premise.

"When we stop to reflect upon our past Horizon seasons, we remember with pride the many faces of our children, feeling the excitement of discovery as they found new situations.  The emotional security provided by the staff in order for the children to try something new.  the open lines of communication between adults and children.  The pleasure of all when a child was able to reach his/her own success."
