The clinical nutrition department in the
School
of
Health Profession
, Behavioral and Life Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science which prepares students to enter the biomedical area as nutrition professionals, nutritition graduate students or students in another health profession. Specifically, our three interrelated objectives are:
- To provide all science and math requirements for application to schools of allopathic and osteopathic medicine, dentistry, podiatry and other professional health science specialties.
- To provide the bases of nutrition science and research methodologies required for graduate study in biomedical sciences, including the NYIT Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition. The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science prepares students to enter the biomedical area as
- To provide didactic foundation knowledge and skills in dietetics and to enable the graduate to apply for supervised practice training leading to credentialing as a Registered Dietitian (RD).
Students take rigorous courses in life sciences, math and physics integrated with courses in nutrition science and are exposed to the excitement of cutting edge nutrition teaching. The emphasis on metabolic regulation and critical analysis of biomedical and nutrition literature enhances student knowledge and skill in effectively using nutrition to enhance optimal human health and to prevent and control human disease. Students actively participate in ongoing faculty nutrition projects and are exposed to a spectrum of opportunities to apply nutrition concepts in clinical field practica under faculty guidance. Elective credits at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels are available, with permission, for students to develop clinical and bench research projects under faculty supervision. Extensive interdisciplinary collaborations between students in the health science disciplines at NYIT enhance future professional communication among members of the health care team.
The DPD (Didactic program in Dietetics) program offers a curriculum of expertise within the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition. The program has Approval status by CADE, the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education.
Our program goals for the DPD are as follows:
o Over a five year period alumni have achieved more than a 75%
acceptance rate to dietetic internship programs.
o Over a five year period alumni achieve a pass rate of at least 80 percent on
the (Registered Dietitian Exam).
o Within 12 months of completing the program, at least 60 percent of graduates obtain
employment related to their major, and or/enrolled in an accredited continuing
education program and/or pass the RD exam.
o All students achieve a satisfactory rating for all entry level competencies
-
Through encouragement, motivation and support, program faculty and staff will increase the number of students who complete their dietetics program of study.
-
85% of the students have completed the program
-
85% of the students indicated on surveys “satisfactory” or better scores with respect to encouragement, motivation and support provided by the faculty.
-
The program will prepare graduates to function effectively in many different types of settings during their internship and subsequent working career.
-
85% of students completing the program report confidence in working in at least 2 different career settings.
-
80% of internship directors rate students’ competencies average or above in the areas of academic preparation and non-academic preparation towards the end of the internship rotations.
The BS in Nutrition Science is currently granted developmental accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
ADA
is located at 120 South
Riverside
Plaza, Suite2000 Chicago, Illinois 60606 Email: cade@eatright.org Phone: 312.899.0040
As a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) the program is approved to provide a didactic Verification Statement, attesting that the student has met entry-level didactic knowledge and skills set by CADE
for credentialing as a Registered Dietitian (RD). The baccalaureate degree and the didactic Verification Statement are required for application to any CADE-accredited supervised practice program, including the NYIT Dietetic Internship. Upon completion of supervised practice experience, the student receives a performance Verification Statement and is eligible to sit for the registration examination given by the Commission on Registration of the
ADA
. Students who pass this examination and receive the RD credential are also eligible for certification by
New York S
tate
in Dietetics and Nutrition (CDN).
