Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares students for a professional nursing career. Classes are held at the Manhattan campus near Columbus Circle and the Old Westbury campus on Long Island. The program includes traditional science and clinical courses such as chemistry, anatomy, physiology and clinical nursing rotations. In addition, this program offers a number of unique features not found in most other nursing programs. First, our program is founded on the concepts and theories of transcultural nursing.

The NYIT nursing student will take science and clinical courses that take into consideration the multi-cultural experiences of both patients and healthcare professionals. To this end, anthropology courses have been incorporated into the curriculum and transcultural topics into the traditional nursing courses.

Second, clinical practice locations are not limited to the hospital setting. Students will also learn how professional nursing is expanding its practice into community-based facilities. These foci, i.e., transcultural nursing and community-based nursing, will prepare the student for the realities of nursing practice in the 21st century. We believe our program enables graduates to be highly effective as professional nurses.

All nursing students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 with no science grade below a C, and show evidence of good ethical, moral and personal character for entry into the junior year. At this point, the beginning of the professional phase of the program, a recommendation by the advisor and the Academic Review Committee  Nursing is required. A minimum grade of C+ in all nursing courses and a minimum per-semester grade point average of 2.5 within nursing courses are required for continued matriculation as a nursing major. Effective May 2005, the minimum cumulative GPA for entry and continuation in the professional phase will be 2.75. Per semester GPA for nursing courses must equal the current required GPA. Also effective May, 2005, the minimum GPA in prerequisite science courses for entry into the professional phase will be 2.5. Students may be required to take nationally normed tests throughout the curriculum and to make a satisfactory score on such tests. In the last semester of the curriculum, students may be required to take a comprehensive examination and to make a satisfactory score on such an examination prior to taking the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. Students will be required to provide evidence of: required immunizations and health clearance, including history and physical examination, student nurse malpractice insurance, and current certification in basic life support before clinical placement. All health professions and life science students have access to the library and other facilities of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.
