The Master of Science in occupational therapy program prepares students for a career in occupational therapy, a profession much in demand. Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activities with individuals who are limited by physical injury, illness, psychosocial dysfunction, developmental or learning disabilities, poverty, cultural differences or the aging process, in order to maximize independence, prevent further disability and maintain health. The practice encompasses evaluation, treatment and consultation. Specific occupational therapy services include:
- developing strategies to increase independence in daily living skills and developmental perceptual-motor skills;
- developing play skills, pre-vocational and leisure capacities;
- designing, fabricating or applying selected adaptive equipment, prosthetic and orthotic devices;
- using specifically designed crafts and exercises to enhance performance;
- administering and interpreting tests; and
- adapting environments for persons with disabilities.
The occupational therapy program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220; 301.652.AOTA; www.aota.org. The program is approved by the New York State Education Department. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will certify the candidate as an occupational therapist registered (OTR). Most states also require licensure in
order to practice; however, eligibility for state licenses is usually based on the results of the NBCOT examination, as well as on other requirements.
