On November 1, 2000, the NYIT department of physical therapy received full accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. Students graduate with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) and are fully prepared to take the Physical Therapy Licensing Exam and begin a career in physical therapy. Additionally, our department now offers a transitional DPT (tDPT) in the US and Brazil and a post-professional MS in Amman, Jordan. The two international programs are not accredited by CAPTE and do not automatically entitle the graduate to take FSBPT's licensing exam for practice in the US. However, coursework from those programs may satisfy certain requirements needed to be a candidate for the licensing examination.
Physical therapy promotes optimal human health and function through the application of scientific principles to prevent, identify, assess, correct or alleviate acute or prolonged movement dysfunctions. Physical therapy encompasses areas of specialized competence and includes the development of new principles and applications to meet existing and emerging health needs more effectively. Other professional activities that serve the purpose of physical therapy are research, education, consultation and administration.
The entry-level program in physical therapy is a doctoral degree program providing entry-level professional education in physical therapy. The three-year program begins with Gross Anatomy and Kinesiology in the summer. Students who possess a Bachelor’s degree and the required prerequisites can apply directly to the doctoral program contingent on space availability. For information on the combined Bachelor of Science in Life Science and Doctor of Physical Therapy, see the NYIT Undergraduate Catalog, Department of Life Sciences.
