TOPIC: The purpose of this research is to collect current information on the career field of your choice. You are to choose any job title from the career field you wish to explore.

This information will be gathered from a variety of sources including the NYIT Library, the Career Network Center [CNC], the Internet, your local libraries, NYIT or other college professors, and other working professionals currently employed in the field. Your Seminar instructors, NYIT librarians, Barbara Van Buren, career counselor, and peer mentors will help in defining possible research topics.

Once your data has been collected, notes organized and printed in final form, you will cite your findings and conclusion to the College Success Seminar in an oral presentation.

 

PART I: RESEARCH PORTFOLIO
A. Career Interest Survey including FOCUS findings and articles.
B. Library Research including citations, computer print-outs, copies of articles.
C. Interview notes in paragraph or formal interview [script] format.
D. Outlines and index cards.
E. Bibliography [Sources Cited] must be included in finished form. Bibliography must be typed, include citations from all sources, and follow MLA or APA guidelines.

Due dates will be indicated on the Table of Contents. Instructors and/or librarians must sign off each assigned portion as it is completed. Feel free to finish segments before the assigned due date.

 

PART II: ORAL PRESENTATION
Three to five minute presentations will be evaluated according to the format page included. Visual aids may be used to help clarify information/research. Request proper procedure from instructors regarding use of audio-visual hardware.

Less than three minutes presentation time is not acceptable for credit.

 

PART III: EVALUATION
Present your completed research portfolio, bibliography, [sources cited] outline and presentation notes at the time of your presentation in class. Remember that your typed bibliography using MLA or APA guidelines is required for credit.

Both the completed research portfolio AND the oral presentation receive evaluation.
