The National Academies Press offers over 3,700 free full text online books, studies and technical reports in the areas of natural science, education and technology. Some of these are of quite recent publication dates. One can browse by broad subject areas, focus on specific topics using their "discovery" search engine (the search options are rather basic), link to "titles like this one" and also search within the texts of individual books as within NetLibrary. One can also purchase the books online--if one is really interested in a topic, it may make sense to buy the copy rather than wrestle with it on the computer screen.
