Library Wins SocINDEX with Full Text

Jennifer Tsao, reference librarian in Manhattan, attended the Nylink Database Showcase Conference on Nov. 17, 2006 and won a one-year subscription to SocINDEX with Full Text worth an estimated $9,000.  SocINDEX with Full Text offers comprehensive coverage of sociology, encompassing all sub-disciplines and closely related areas of study. These include criminology and criminal justice, ethnic and racial studies, gender studies, marriage and family, religion, social development, social work, socio-cultural anthropology, substance abuse, violence, and many others. More than 10,000 author profiles are included, covering the most prolific, most cited, and most frequently searched authors in the database. Each author profile includes biographical data and bibliographic information, which allow users to quickly ascertain an author's areas of expertise and academic/professional focus. To access this resource, please click here.

Manhattan Library's First-Floor Renovation is a Success

The Manhattan library was recently visited by Aaron Cohen Associates Ltd., a library planning consulting firm. Aaron Cohen, founder of the company, walked by the library one day and was so impressed with its design and technology that he made an appointment with the library director, Elisabete Ferretti, to visit with his development team of librarians, architects, and interior designers. They were very interested in knowing how the collaborative spaces were working out. The group took pictures and were especially impressed with the design, the cafe-style computer tables, the RFID technology, and the incorporation of the self-service model. The first floor of Manhattan's library has received a positive reaction from the entire NYIT community as well.

Juried Student Art Contest - Deadline Extended

The deadline for the juried student art contest for the Wisser coffee lounge has been extended to May 1. The winning artwork will be a permanent addition to Wisser. Any NYIT fine arts student can enter their drawing, painting, computer generated, multimedia, or wall sculpture fitting a space of 54 inches in width and 45 inches in height. Hofstra Uses Valuable Resources at the Art and Architecture Library

A professor of art history at Hofstra University has been using the resources of NYIT's Art and Architecture library for the past few semesters for his senior seminar in art history class. He has been working with the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Archive, which is owned by only 173 libraries.

This resource is only available in the library. Please see one of the Wisser librarians for further details.

NYIT Library on Facebook

Would you like to be informed of new Internet-based library services that you can use from home, library hour changes, or new book lists?  The library now has a Facebook profile ("Information at NYIT") and has created three new Facebook groups:

Hot Links - Websites Worth Sharing: This is the place to find and share great sites.  Tell us about your favorite funny, educational, can't-do-without sites.

What Are You Reading - This is a place to exchange great book titles.  Want a book that will make you laugh out loud? Try John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces. Have your read a book that changed the way you live or work?  Let everyone know about it.

NYIT Library Group - This is a place where you can comment on the NYIT libraries.  If you want to share information on what's great (or not so great) about the libraries, here is your chance.

New Payment System for Photocopies Coming Soon

The libraries will begin to  implement a new payment system for photocopies that utilizes student IDs. Within the next few weeks, Wisser Library will be setting up Xerox copy machines with new Blackboard card readers. Students can put money to pay for copies on their flex account by going into the Office of the Bursar or using the CMC machine in Riland Cafe. Students will then be able to make copies by swiping their ID in the card reader. Students need to make sure to put funds on their account and to bring their ID to the library. The same system will be implemented in the Art and Architecture library and the NYCOM medical library next fall. The price of one copy will remain 10 cents.
