  Library of Congress Classification

A call number is a way of classifying an item by subject so those items on the same subject can be shelved together. It shows the exact position of the item within the library, the collection, and the subject area. The classification scheme used by NYIT Library is the Library of Congress Classification scheme.

All parts of a call number must be taken into account if you are to find the item on the shelf.

The main part of the call number is the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) Number. Then there will be a character followed by a Running Number and if relevant, an Edition Number. There may also be a Volume Number (V1, V2) and perhaps a part number (P1, P2).

Here is an example:

Author - Garcia Lorca, Federico
Title - Collected Poems.
