Configuring Windows XP for Academic Wireless Internet Access

 

Install the Wireless Card

Follow these instructions to install the wireless card if it's not built-in.

  1. With the wireless card still inserted, Windows will detect the card and begin the hardware installation. A message will appear on the taskbar.

    After a few seconds the notification changes to "Installation Complete".

  2. Click Start > Connect To > Wireless Network Connection.


    The Connect to Wireless Network dialog box is displayed.
  3. Click Advanced.


    The Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box is displayed.
     
  4. Click Add under the Preferred networks section.

    The Wireless Network Properties dialog box is displayed.
  5. Type 101 in the Network name (SSID) field and click OK.


  6. Click OK.



    After a few seconds a notification is displayed on the taskbar stating that your computer is now connected to the wireless network.

 

 

 

 

 

Installing Network Services

Follow these steps to install the correct network services.

  1. Select Start > Connect To and click on Show all connections.
  2. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties. The Wireless Network Connection window is displayed.
  3. To correctly configure Windows XP for wireless, verify that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is listed as an installed service. (This service should already be installed by default.)

    Note: File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is an optional service that allows you to see other machines in your network neighborhood. Although you can install this service it is not supported by Computing Services.
  4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list and click Properties.

    The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box is displayed.
  5. Verify that the Obtain an IP address automatically and the Obtain DNS server address automatically options are selected.

  6. Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box.

    The Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box is redisplayed.
  7. Click OK.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The first time you try to use a web browser after the successful installation of the wireless network card, you will not be able to go on internet till you have the proper proxy setting for your web browser.

Following is the procedure to configure your web browser for NYIT’s internet access.


INTERNET BROWSER PROXY SETTINGS

 

In order to connect properly to the network, you will have to modify the proxy setting in your web browser software.  Follow these step-by-step instructions to successfully make this modification:

 

For MS Internet Explorer follow the procedure listed below

 

1.       Open Internet Explorer

2.       Click on Tools

3.       Click on Internet Options

4.       Go to Connections tab and open

5.       Click LAN Settings

6.       Type in proxy.nyit.edu in the address field, and 80 in the Port field, and check the box below these fields

7.       Click OK to save, and OK again to exit Internet Options

 

For Netscape Communicator follow the procedure listed below

 

1.       Open Netscape Communicator

2.       Click on Edit and open Preferences

3.       Double-click on Advanced

4.       Click on Proxies and open view

5.       Type in proxy.nyit.edu and 80 in the Port field for HTTP, Security, FTP, and Gopher

6.       Click OK to save, and exit Netscape Communicator
