Cooperation: Architecture
Faculty Advisors: Thomas Rochon, 2007 Solar Decathlon principal faculty investigator and associate professor of architecture; Frank Mruk, associate dean of NYIT's School of Architecture and Design.
The architecture team’s design plan focuses on providing an adjustable living space, self-sustainability and mobility, as well as promoting the use of solar energy. The concept for the house is openness—open to nature, interpretation and adaptation. The design features an open floor plan attached to a manifold chamber along the east-west axis. The living space is adjustable, allowing the inhabitant to manipulate the solar home’s space for optimum comfort and the south wall windows virtually connect the occupant to nature. Louvers, or adjustable shades, will provide privacy and sunlight control. The louvers are equipped with photovoltaic cells, therefore keeping sun radiation out and at the same time create electricity. The manifold will contain the kitchen, bathroom, and the mechanical and electrical systems. The solar home will be fully ADA compliant. |
