New York Institute of Technology's (NYIT) 2007 Solar Decathlon team is on a quest for true energy independence. Students are committed to researching the environmental benefits of solar energy technologies and sustainable design. The team is dedicated to communicating to the world about the many advantages of alternative and renewable energy sources.
NYIT is one of 20 international colleges and universitiesand the only institute of higher education from the New York metropolitan areaselected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to compete in the 2007 Solar Decathlon. The collegiate competition gives NYIT students hands-on experience and an opportunity to bring their design and development plans to life.
The interdisciplinary, multi-campus team is composed of a diverse group of dedicated undergraduate and graduate students studying architecture, interior design, engineering, communication arts, marketing, and culinary arts. Faculty members from each department serve as project advisors.
This is NYIT's second time competing in the Solar Decathlon. The 2005 entry is now permanently located at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, N.Y. The home is occupied by a member of the academy and is extensively monitored and tested by the USMMA's Alternative Energy Program and the DOE.
At a special ceremony in June 2006, NYIT and USMMA dedicated it America's first solar-hydrogen home. |
