NYIT Solar Decathlon Team Open House/Sendoff Celebration

Old Westbury, N.Y. - Give the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Solar Decathlon team a special sendoff to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Join fellow community members on Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m., at the Midge Karr Fine Arts Center parking lot, Old Westbury, N.Y., campus, to celebrate the completion of OPEN House, NYIT’s entry for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2007 Solar Decathlon. The ceremony will include remarks from NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D.; Judith Dimaio, dean of NYIT's School of Architecture and Design; team members; sponsors; and elected officials, and will conclude with tours of OPEN House until 1 p.m.

NYIT is scheduled to disassemble OPEN House on Monday, Oct. 1 and plan to leave for Washington, D.C. the following day. All teams can begin reassembling their homes on the National Mall beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

The Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered house. Teams are judged in 10 contests, which include architecture; engineering; market viability; communications; comfort zone; appliances; hot water; lighting; energy balance; and getting around. NYIT is one of 20 colleges and universities—and the only school from the New York metropolitan area—selected to compete in the solar home competition.

Solar Decathlon 2007 is Oct. 12-20, 2007. All homes are open for public tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekends, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, except Wednesday, Oct. 17, when houses are closed for competition purposes.
