Arch Schools: R(each)ing Out

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter hosts its third annual exhibition, arch schools: r[each]ing out. The showcase features student work representing the nine New York area architecture schools, including NYIT, and eight other invited schools. The show is on view at the Center for Architecture through Oct. 19. NYIT has on display three projects representing the 2007 New York Chapter’s presidential theme “Architecture Inside/Out,” including one that highlights the work accomplished for the 2007 Solar Decathlon. According to AIA, the goal of the exhibition is to “foster a closer connection between the schools, students, and the profession.”

American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE ) Winter Meeting

The ASHRAE Winter Meeting's technical program theme is Reaching New Heights in Net-Zero Energy Design, and will feature programs about LEED/Sustainability, Commissioning, Dehumidification, and Controls.

Co-sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), the AHR Expo is the world's largest heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigerating (HVAC&R) trade show event for industry professionals.

Starflower Experiences Summer Camp

Communication Arts Team Leader James Messina visited summer campers— ages 9 to 12—at Starflower Experiences Inc., a not-for-profit educational organization in Melville, N.Y. that offers children environmental-friendly programs and experiences. James discussed important issues such as global warming and renewable energy, and talked about the Solar Decathlon and NYIT’s 2007 entry, OPEN House.

New York City Solar Summit
June 21, 2007
Gregory Sachs, a project advisor on NYIT’s 2007 Solar Decathlon team and lead engineer on NYIT’s 2005 team, served as a conference moderator and shared his experiences taking part in the 2005 Solar Decathlon. Sachs, a program manager and engineering instructor for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Alternative Power Program, also encouraged support of NYIT’s 2007 team. The event was held at the American Museum of Natural History and was sponsored by The City University of New York, Million Solar Roofs Initiative, Center for Sustainable Energy, PlanNYC, and the American Museum of Natural History’s Center for Biodiversity and Conservation.

Architecture Team Leader Mathew Mathosian and Communication Arts Team Leader James Messina presented the design and development plans for OPEN House at the AIA Long Island Chapter’s fifth annual product fair at the Huntington Hilton Hotel in Huntington, N.Y.

Energy Shock, Climate Change, and the Role of Technology
NYIT’s Energy Conference

NYIT’s Solar Decathlon team presented their design and development plans for OPEN House to guests who attended NYIT’s energy conference. Hosted at NYIT’s de Seversky Center on the college’s Old Westbury, N.Y., campus, the event focused on the critical impact of global warming and energy consumption. The team also had the opportunity to eat lunch with scientist and solar pioneer Stanford Ovshinsky, who was awarded NYIT’s first Leadership in Sustainable Technology Award.

Metropolitan New York Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI)
May 9, 2007

3-D Graphics Team Leader Antony Cestra and Project Advisor Heather Korb presented the design and development plans for OPEN House at the CSI Metro NY Chapter’s monthly meeting at Annie Moore’s Restaurant in New York City. The meeting focused on structural glass.

Rethink, Rebuild, Renew: Creating a Sustainable Future for Long Island
Sustainable Long Island Conference

NYIT’s Solar Decathlon team joined more than 350 Long Island business owners, municipal officials, community leaders, architects, and developers at Stony Brook University to explore the region’s sustainable future. The conference featured discussions and workshops on four major areas of sustainability: Sustainable Business Practices; Sustainable Design; Sustainable Energy; and Creating Sustainable Communities: Business and Government Working Together.

The Long Island Chapter of U.S. Green Building Council hosted a membership networking event at the Rex Corp Large Media Room in Melville, N.Y. Guests learned how to become a LEED Accredited Professional.

The 2010 Imperative: Global Emergency Teach-in
Feb. 20, 2007
Held at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City, the event addressed global warming and climate change in a live interactive webcast that was broadcasted to more than 500,000 students, faculty, deans and practicing professionals in the architecture, planning and design communities in North and South America.
