NYIT 2007 Solar Decathlon Team Set to Begin Construction Phase

Old Westbury, N.Y. - NYIT's Solar Decathlon team began their construction site preparation work last week in the Midge Karr Fine Arts Design Center parking lot on the college's Old Westbury, N.Y., campus. After more than a year of designing and developing their concept, and with less than eight months remaining until the international competition, the team is now ready to begin the construction phase.

"We are excited to start swinging our hammers," said Matthew Vecchione, student project manager of NYIT's Solar Decathlon team. "After more than a year of planning and designing, we are eager to take what we have learned in the classroom and bring it to life."

The team will initially be building the solar home's deck followed by the steel construction. When the home is completed next fall, it be dissembled and transported to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where it will be reassembled, displayed and judged. The 2007 Solar Decathlon takes place Oct. 12 - 20.
