The
Fifth Annual Faculty Scholars Reception, hosted by the Office of
Academic Affairs at the de Seversky Center, was held on March 30, 2006
to celebrate the success of NYIT faculty who received external grants,
published or edited a book, edited a journal or produced a major
creative work in 2005. Sixteen faculty members were honored for their
accomplishments: Carol Dahir, Assistant Professor, Education, honored for her edited publication, The New York State Model for Comprehensive K-12 School Counseling Programs. Luis E. Navia, Chairperson, Social Sciences, and Professor, Philosophy, honored for his book, Diogenes the Cynic: The War Against the World. Daniel Durning, Associate Professor, Fine Arts, honored as the producer and host of Art and Technology—an Internet arts radio program for MOMA/WPS1—and for his solo exhibition, Objects of Radiance. Robert M. Smith, Associate Professor, Fine Arts, honored as an exhibiting artist and co-organizer of the International Rapid Prototyping Sculpture Exhibition. Frances Campani, Associate Professor, Architecture. Jon Michael Schwarting, Professor, Architecture, and Director, Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Design, honored for their mixed-use commercial and residential building in Port Jefferson, NY, which received an Archi Award Citation from the Long Island Chapter, American Institute of Architects. James Fauvell, Chairperson, Communication Arts and Advertising, Old Westbury, and Associate Professor, Communication Arts, honored as the director and producer of Smart Growth: The Future of Long Island, which aired on WLIW21 New York Public Television and won the 2005 FOLIO Award. Claude Gagna, Associate Professor, Life Sciences, honored for his Method for Immobilizing Multistranded Nucleic Acid Molecules by Modifying More Than One Strand Thereof, and Binding Each Strand to a Solid Support, for which he received a U.S. Patent. Beyhan Karahan, Associate Professor, Architecture, honored for the two six-story residential buildings she designed for sites at 381 Broome Street and 176 Mulberry Street, New York City, and for which she received a 2005 Housing Design Award Citation from the New York Chapter, American Institute of Architects. Dolores Burton, Associate Professor, Education, honored for her grant-funded projects in inclusive education sponsored by Syracuse University, Wyandanch Public Schools, and Central Islip Union Free School District, respectively. Heskia Heskiaoff, Dean, School of Engineering and Technology, and Professor, Computer Science and Industrial Engineering. Ayat Jafari, Chairman and Professor, Electrical Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Michael Colef, Associate Professor, Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications Management. Paul A. Stirpe, Associate Professor, Computer Science, honored for New York Institute of Technology Virtual Data Centers, a grant from the National Security Agency. Stan Silverman, Director, Technology-Based Learning Systems, and Professor, Education, who was honored for his seven external grants in technology-based learning, from the Sloan Foundation, United Federation of Teachers, New York State Education Department, Nassau BOCES, and the New York City Board of Education, respectively. |
