NYCOMEC Sets Historical Record

For the first time in NYCOMEC history, all of the consortium's internship and first-year residency positions are currently filled for Academic Year 2011-2012. Our consistent national, regional, and local recruiting complements recruiting efforts simultaneously occurring at our institutions and has resulted n notable increases in the demand for positions in our NY and NJ hospitals. As the quality of the training and qualifications of the Trainees continue to rise, our goal from Day One of their osteopathic postdoctoral education is to offer Trainees a wide array of opportunities to learn, network and grow throughout their career. They recognize that we take pride in monitoring the quality of their education as NYCOMEC actively enforces the AOA Duty Hours Policy and takes the time to listen to their feedback not only durig the regularly-held Trainee Committee meetings, but throughout the year.

New NYCOMEC Members

On Friday, September 26th, the NYCOMEC Board of Directors approved the following four hospitals as new members of our medical education consortium:

Ellis Hospital is an almost 300 bed hospital located in Schenectady, New York. As a result of NYS's Berger Commission, 3 Hospitals in Schenectady merged: Ellis Hospital, St. Clare's Hospital (which had been a NYCOMEC Member) and Bellevue Women's Hospital. The combined entity will consolidate health care for the city and attempt to maximize efficiency. The hospital also has about 80 nursing home beds, 50 psychiatric beds over 20,000 emergency department visits annually and over 180,000 ambulatory care visits annually. Schenectady is located in the Capital District of New York State and provides easy access to New York City or the Adirondacks.
Under the leadership of their DME, Peter Vellis, D.O. and Director of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education, John Petrillo, D.O. (NYCOM Alumn) they offer a NYCOM sponsored Traditional Rotating Internship and a Family Practice Residency. They also offer several third and fourth year clerkships for NYCOM students.

Jersey City Medical Center

Jersey City Medical Center, located in Jersey City, NJ has joined NYCOMEC. Across the river from Manhattan, JCMC is a 356 bed facility with almost 65,000 Emergency Department visits annually. JCMC is a full service hospital with several academic affiliations. The physical plant of the hospital is only a few years old and reflects the character of the city which is also undergoing tremendous growth and urban renewal.

They presently have an ACGME Internal Medicine Residency and an ACGME Ob/Gyn Residency. They anticipate seeking AOA approval for their medicine residency and working with NYCOMEC programs at other institutions in various specialties.

Trinitas Hospital has joined NYCOMEC. Located in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Trinitas is a 250 bed facility with over 50,000 Emergency department visits and over 115,000 ambulatory care visits annually. They have a very busy urban catchment area which includes Newark International Airport.

Trinitas has long standing ACGME Internal Medicine Residency and a new psychiatric residency at their New Point campus. They take students from several schools and professions in various disciplines. They have their own school of nursing which is the sixth largest in the U.S. They are exploring applying for AOA approval of their internal medicine residency and their psychiatric residency.

Peconic Bay Medical Center has joined NYCOMEC. PBMC is a 150 bed facility located in Riverhead, New York. Peconic Bay is part of a joint operating agreement with Southampton Hospital on the South Fork of Long Island (an existing NYCOMEC member) and Eastern Long Island Hospital on the North Fork.

In contrast to the other 3 Long Island counties, eastern Suffolk County has a rapidly growing population and an increasing need for health care.

Under the leadership of their Director of Medical Education, George Ruggerio, D.O. (NYCOM alumn) they are currently exploring their options for providing osteopathic clerkships and graduate medical education.
