| ABOUT THE CENTER |
Founded in 1998, the Center's primary goal is to provide a focal point for professional development, curriculum innovations and research into the effective use of technology in teaching and learning at the College.
The Center's director, Dr. Michael Uttendorfer, is an associate professor in education and dean of the School of Education (teaching courses in multimedia applications and instructional technology), has a master's degree in Instructional Technology from NYIT, and recently earned a doctorate specializing in instructional technology and distance education. Dr. Uttendorfer has 12 years experience teaching mathematics in secondary schools and is permanently certified in secondary mathematics education. He spent 18 years as an instructional designer, content author and director of curriculum development for a major educational software company in New Jersey. During his tenure there, he was responsible for the design and development of over forty computer-based instructional courses in mathematics, reading, writing and occupational training for adult populations.
The Center provides faculty development in the use of new media and digital technologies and assists with the integration of technology into effective teaching practices through workshops and individual consultations. The Center has been an ever-expanding resource for information on the latest innovations and research into the use of technology in higher education.
For the fifth year, the Center has sponsored its faculty fellows who will work on curriculum development and research projects aimed at finding and applying new methods, media and technologies to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
To further these aims, the latest computer hardware and software for developing interactive, multimedia instruction has been purchased for locations on each of our three main campuses located in Old Westbury, Central Islip and Manhattan. A new, state-of-the-art training room has been established on the third floor of Wisser Library in Old Westbury for one-on-one and small group instruction and consultation.
