Recommendations:

  1. Do not buy wood from any natural forest, such as, red cedar or beech.
  2. Do not buy what you are not going to use. Think of using second hand wood.
  3. Recycle.
  4. Use alternative construction materials.
  5. Choose timber from trees planted by people.
  6. Think about using eco-timber. This timber is Greenpeace endorsed and carries a registered trademark to guarantee its source and environmental standards. For information you can contact: Greenpeace at 0-800-22-33-43 or their webside at www.greenpeacenewzealand.org.
  7. Write to U.S. senators and representatives asking them to support the bipartisan Endangered Species Recovery Act. Urge that all Pacific Lumber lands be managed in an ecologically responsible manner, including permanent protection of all ancient redwood groves and other habitat necessary for the conservation and recovery of threatened and endangered species, as required by the federal Endangered Species Act. Implement the recommendations of the Recovery Plan for the Marbled Murrelet. Develop a plan that would provide for the workers and families dependent upon Pacific Lumber for their livelihood. Ask for on-site monitoring of lumber operations by the citizens of the area.
  8. Call President Clinton at 202-456-1111 and urge them to help implement a Debt-for-Nature swap for the Headwaters Forest.
  9. Call Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt at 202-208-7351 and tell him to do whatever he can to help preserve the Headwaters as public lands. Ask him to introduce a bill to end commercial logging of native forests on public lands.
  10. Write to the President of Maxxam Corp. Charles Hurwitz, 5847 San Felipe Suite 2600, Houston, Texas 77257, and let him know your opinion.
  11. Surf the internet to get more information about how to help save these Ancient Forests.
  12. Do not buy wood from Home Depot. They get their wood from these forests.
